System Engineer

Purpose/Function

The purpose of this position is to provide critical systems engineering skills as NASA continues to evolve systems for exploration missions including Gateway, lunar surface, Mars transit, and Mars surface missions. It is expected that this position is in support of a larger project team and will receive direction from a more senior systems engineer. This position will participate over time in activities throughout the life cycle phases of systems, from early concept development, trade studies, design, integration, testing, verification and validation, operations and through sustainment. This position will support project team activities including defining system stakeholder needs, decomposing system functions, developing technical requirements, capturing system interfaces, performing design analyses, supporting the planning and execution of system verification and validation activities, and supporting system testing and operations. Awareness of NASA, DoD and/or industry systems engineering and project management processes and practices is considered a strength. There is an expectation that the candidate will become well-versed in systems engineering principles and practices to support the communication of systems engineering activities and artifacts across disciplines. Awareness of spaceflight impacts to human physiology, behavior, and medical state is desired. Experience with Model-Based Systems Engineering approaches and tools is also desired. Other duties will be assigned as required.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Responsible for compliance with Safety, Health and Environmental plan, must be committed to a high standard of safety and be willing and able to comply with all safety laws and all of the Company‚Äôs safety policies and rules and must be willing to report safety violations and potential safety violations to appropriate supervisory or management personnel.
  • Responsible for compliance with the Quality Assurance Plan, policies and procedures
  • Must maintain regular and acceptable attendance level as determined by the Company
  • Responsible for completing all assigned training
  • Responsible for creating Concept of Operations content
  • Responsible for deriving, tracing, allocating, and managing requirements
  • Responsible for supporting definitions of system architectures
  • Responsible for supporting trade studies and design analyses
  • Responsible for capturing system interface descriptions
  • Responsible for tracking system technical resources
  • Responsible for supporting verification and validation planning and execution
  • Ability to translate requirements into design solutions
  • Ability to work within a dynamic team environment
  • Ability to understand and execute processes and procedures
  • Ability to participate in system testing
  • Ability to perform system operations and sustainment activities
  • Well-developed skills in both written and verbal communication

Education/Experience

Required:

BS degree in engineering with 0-5 years experience

Desired:

  • MS Degree in engineering
  • Use of MagicDraw, DOORS, or CRADLE
  • Working knowledge of Sharepoint
  • Background in bioastronautics
  • Background in human spaceflight mission full life cycle activitie

Skills/Training

Required:

  • Proficent in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Powerpoint)
  • Ability to read engineering drawings
  • Ability to translate concepts across multiple disciplines

Desired:

  • Familiarity with NASA or DoD Work Instructions
  • Familiarity with NASA or DoD Work Instructions
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering experience
  • Prior experience with the NASA flight hardware development process
  • Experience with data visualization tools and scripting languages
